poorly funded public schools

There are many outside influences that come into play on having a bad school. For example, in the book it explores how some schools in Chicago areas are surrounded by many influences such as drugs and adult entertainment. Another example would be even from my very own community. Tennyson high school, located in what some call ‘South Hayward.” Tennyson is heavily influenced by its outside community, and it reminded me of some schools in the book. Students know its community and see that no one really cares about school so they get sucked into the norm of selling drugs, being a gang member, or even becoming a prostitute which results in dropping out. Students see their community selling drugs and all, and think its ok to do so, so they drop out to earn quick money. They get so used to this lifestyle that they never want to achieve real education.

As I did research on Tennyson I came upon a website called “Greatschools.org.” I read some reviews and one really stood out to me. A student from its own school commented saying “…..Tennyson  is low in cash no offence but it’s mostly beacuae of the ethniticy that exists most around the area which is latinos.” This showed me many things. The students know they are affected by its community there because the school is near poor places, and that this student could barely spell. This brings me to my next point, and it is that bad communities can result in even worse schools. It was unfortunate to read this students post because I can only imagine what type of teaching goes on in that school.

The environment of the school also has a great impact on having a bad school or not. Imagine walking into a small school the roof almost falling apart, about 30 or more kids into a crowded class room, and in some cases the teacher doesn’t even know your name. I would not like to come back to that school if I was a student because the ambiance in the school is just so depressing and unappreciated. For example in the book, a school in East St. Louis was so packed that they had to hold classes in the cafeteria. There were probably 4-5 classes being held at the same time in there. At the same time the sewage system was messed up allowing raw sewage to get inside the school, because of this students did not want to attend school which resulted in drop outs.

Homework 1 paagraph

Poorly funded schools are not getting the same chance as other students at regularly funded schools. They are not allowed the same chance because the school that they attend are falling apart, no room in the classes, no text books, and most importantly a motivated teacher. This is the perfect recipe for disaster. People wonder why kids that go to these schools do not graduate. Without any text books or any consistent teacher how can a student exceed its full potential? There is no absolute way the school district can allow students to learn in this kind of environment. Students in better schools range about 15-20 kids max per class versus 30-35 students in poorer schools. If nothing is done about this problem, the rich will stay rich, and the poor will stay poor.

Everyone wants to take the easy route to success, but little want to actually do the hard work to get there. If teachers just hand out packets to kids it shows them that life will just hand out stuff for them, not get worked for. For example Ms. Williams, my current English teacher, gave us this essay out a clear prompt. At first it was really difficult to understand what she wanted from her students, she wanted us to think about the stuff we think about. I have never done that before and really could not think anymore. But as class went on, she showed us with her enthusiasm how to develop our thoughts. Now I understand. If teachers could find the power not to be lazy this could help our country in many ways.
If children are stuck doing packets and individual work all day at school, they could lose a lot of other skills. Imagine, being stuck at a desk just doing school work that would be a boring day. Students need to interact with one another, make friends. If teachers do not allow their students to have group work or even have some type of fun with one another, they will not develop their social skills that are essential later on in life.
As a student myself I dread the classes that have me do boring assignments. I understand not all work will be fun, but at least some work should. If students see that the teacher has no emotion, and does not really do anything exciting, the students will not be interested to come back.  Teachers need to keep us on our heels, have the students wanting more. There is numerous times where I just wanted to skip class because I felt that if I did miss, it would not affect my knowledge. If lazy teachers just changed a couple traits about themselves the teaching world can be greatly changed
