Lost Hope
Back in its hay day, America was one of the few places where dreams became reality. But in today’s cruel world, corruption has taken those dreams, and crushed it into the dirt making it impossible to achieve the American Dream. Many Americans are faced with financial problems every while some Americans live the lavish lifestyle. Those that live the fancy life has placed a never ending nightmare on those who cannot because the rich has now taken the poor’s opportunities and sent them over seas or have dropped their wages down to impossible to live.  The chances for an average persons success is now dwindled down to nothing.
As Americans, we used to take pride in the character we present ourselves towards our neighbors, but now in today’s society, everyone takes pride in money instead of the quality of their character. We do not define anyone on what they do now; instead we let money define us. This means the rich want to have all the money, power, and fame to themselves even if it means making others suffer. Endless amounts of companies are moving out of America to go overseas and to make their product more profitable. This leaves thousands of Americans jobless in the land of once known as the land of opportunity. Travis Smiley author of The Rich and the Rest of Us, states that, “We are a nation where poverty of opportunity is dangerously close to becoming a permanent reality”(45). For a lot of American’s now, it is impossible for them to get out of poverty because of all the jobs leaving the states. Once the jobs leave the states millions of Americans search for other careers, but the jobs that are left here are not enough to keep them financially stable.
People migrated all over the world to come to America because it offered opportunity, equality, and passion. America was built on those three attributes, but now America has turned into a hypocritical nation and goes against its characteristics because in todays world almighty dollar rules everything. Many Americans live under the poverty line and they are suffering daily, and struggle from paycheck to paycheck. If some are able to find a job the pay is so low that many have to get an additional job to hope for a better future. “….Low to mid wage jobs pay between $8.72 to $15 an hour, which is well below the national average hourly wage of $22.60”, addresses Travis Smiley. It is selfish that our own government and jobs systems have created a structure in which most of its citizens and workers are made to fail. Many American families cannot live off a $8.72 an hour wage; it is cruel and inhumane to have a family endure the hardships of foreclosure, starvation, and all the other factors that come into play with poverty. The system of the low living wage has trapped many Americans in and it is nearly impossible to get out.
In Darwin’s famous book of evolution, people only seem to have taken the importance of survival of the fittest. Naturally as humans we go through daily life thinking we will do anything to become successful, even if it does hurt another. But what people seem to forget in the book is that if we work together, we can achieve something greater than that one man could not have possibly done by himself.  In the book, Travis Smiley uses a quote from Aristotle saying, “In a democracy the poor will have more power than the rich, because there are more of them, and the will of the majority is supreme”(176). There are way more people that fall under the higher class of America, if the rest of the country come together and speak about the faults of the country, the rich would have nothing to do but listen. America was built on three things: opportunity, equality, and passion. Our government can take away opportunity, and it can take away equality, but one thing that they cannot take away is our passion. The millions that are suffering in this nation need to come together as one and speak up to the government so things such as poverty can be no more and success can take its place.

America has become a place where many dwell in sadness and struggle each day due to the way the government and corporations has messed up their chances at life. Many cannot afford to live in this country while many jobs are being supplied elsewhere. But we as citizens have a say in this country, to make our nation to move forward we have to come together. If we do not act now our nation will crumble underneath the weight of unspoken words and crushed dreams.

Let’s think about our prison systems

I read the article: U.S. Prisons: Myth Vs. Mayhem. The article is about how America’s prisons systems are spending tremendous amounts of money hoping to make the inmates a better person so they can hope to return to society, but in reality the prison systems are not doing anything. “The notion that people who go to prison return to society as nicer citizens has long since become a bitter laugh” Stated by the author Frank Trippett. I think that prisons are not the best solution for gang members because although it may deter the violent person from society, it won’t deter them from being violent in prisons. The best way to punish a very violent gang member is to isolate them from everyone. One thing that confused me about the article is, if America knows that our prison systems are not really working,  then why do they keep putting money in a dead end system?

poorly funded public schools

There are many outside influences that come into play on having a bad school. For example, in the book it explores how some schools in Chicago areas are surrounded by many influences such as drugs and adult entertainment. Another example would be even from my very own community. Tennyson high school, located in what some call ‘South Hayward.” Tennyson is heavily influenced by its outside community, and it reminded me of some schools in the book. Students know its community and see that no one really cares about school so they get sucked into the norm of selling drugs, being a gang member, or even becoming a prostitute which results in dropping out. Students see their community selling drugs and all, and think its ok to do so, so they drop out to earn quick money. They get so used to this lifestyle that they never want to achieve real education.

As I did research on Tennyson I came upon a website called “Greatschools.org.” I read some reviews and one really stood out to me. A student from its own school commented saying “…..Tennyson  is low in cash no offence but it’s mostly beacuae of the ethniticy that exists most around the area which is latinos.” This showed me many things. The students know they are affected by its community there because the school is near poor places, and that this student could barely spell. This brings me to my next point, and it is that bad communities can result in even worse schools. It was unfortunate to read this students post because I can only imagine what type of teaching goes on in that school.

The environment of the school also has a great impact on having a bad school or not. Imagine walking into a small school the roof almost falling apart, about 30 or more kids into a crowded class room, and in some cases the teacher doesn’t even know your name. I would not like to come back to that school if I was a student because the ambiance in the school is just so depressing and unappreciated. For example in the book, a school in East St. Louis was so packed that they had to hold classes in the cafeteria. There were probably 4-5 classes being held at the same time in there. At the same time the sewage system was messed up allowing raw sewage to get inside the school, because of this students did not want to attend school which resulted in drop outs.

Homework 1 paagraph

Poorly funded schools are not getting the same chance as other students at regularly funded schools. They are not allowed the same chance because the school that they attend are falling apart, no room in the classes, no text books, and most importantly a motivated teacher. This is the perfect recipe for disaster. People wonder why kids that go to these schools do not graduate. Without any text books or any consistent teacher how can a student exceed its full potential? There is no absolute way the school district can allow students to learn in this kind of environment. Students in better schools range about 15-20 kids max per class versus 30-35 students in poorer schools. If nothing is done about this problem, the rich will stay rich, and the poor will stay poor.

3 paragraphs

Everyone wants to take the easy route to success, but little want to actually do the hard work to get there. If teachers just hand out packets to kids it shows them that life will just hand out stuff for them, not get worked for. For example Ms. Williams, my current English teacher, gave us this essay out a clear prompt. At first it was really difficult to understand what she wanted from her students, she wanted us to think about the stuff we think about. I have never done that before and really could not think anymore. But as class went on, she showed us with her enthusiasm how to develop our thoughts. Now I understand. If teachers could find the power not to be lazy this could help our country in many ways.
If children are stuck doing packets and individual work all day at school, they could lose a lot of other skills. Imagine, being stuck at a desk just doing school work that would be a boring day. Students need to interact with one another, make friends. If teachers do not allow their students to have group work or even have some type of fun with one another, they will not develop their social skills that are essential later on in life.
As a student myself I dread the classes that have me do boring assignments. I understand not all work will be fun, but at least some work should. If students see that the teacher has no emotion, and does not really do anything exciting, the students will not be interested to come back.  Teachers need to keep us on our heels, have the students wanting more. There is numerous times where I just wanted to skip class because I felt that if I did miss, it would not affect my knowledge. If lazy teachers just changed a couple traits about themselves the teaching world can be greatly changed
